Tasting Notes
Nose
A big nose of heather and honey, a floral bouquet, oak, cocoa and fresh espresso, vanilla essence and oranges. A lovely sweet toffee appears after a few minutes in the glass, with fresh spices and a light pastry note.
Quite an intense nose if it's one of the first drams from the bottle.
Palate
Lots of wood spices and ginger, a mixture of red and dark dried fruits, berries and buttery toffee - all drizzled in honey. A lovely milky chocolate and melted muscovado sugar note appears if left to rest on your tongue for a few seconds.
Finish
Quite a long finish, sweet and spicy with more milk chocolate and hints of roasted nuts. There's an ever so slight drying end with lingering spice and a dash of pepper. A few sips in, there's a subtle hint of salted caramel as well - unusual.
Overall
A big and bold cask strength release. Honestly, when first opened we weren't that sure. There was a lot of alcohol on the nose but having left the bottle for a week to oxidise ever so slightly, it's definitely a lot more inviting.
Now half way down the bottle, this has become quite a dram for its 10 years. Worth a try but do give it a chance to breathe. Water is likely required for most.
