Tasting Notes
Nose
As expected from Balvenie, a crisp and clear nose – perhaps slightly clinical. Freshly cut grass, pineapple chunks, hazelnuts, vanilla pod, honey, dry oak, coconut and tea leaves. There’s a fair number of citrus notes, lemons, orange and sweet butterscotch.
Palate
More pineapple and oak, vanilla and honey, cream cover grapefruit, butterscotch, buttery milk chocolate and cedar wood.
Finish
Medium – long, slightly drying with oak notes from the nose. More orange and lemons, wood spices and the same unexpected pepper attack towards the end as other Single Barrel bottlings - this was more black pepper than white.
Overall
A near identical whisky to cask 1459.
A great Balvenie, sadly these 15 years-old Single Barrel bottles are no longer produced. As mentioned on the nose, this whisky is very clean and clinical. Although a great whisky, a little roughness would have made it more unique but that’s the Balvenie way.
